The Phoenix suburb of Sun City was named the best place to retire in the U.S. in a new report from GoBankingRates. The report compiles a list of the best U.S. suburbs for retirees to live their optimum lifestyle, and Sun City is number one on the list. According to the GBR report, affordability was important in determining the results.
Sun City captured the top spot with the lowest cost of living overall and average monthly rental rates of $1,196. Retirees with an annual income of just $33,926, factoring in groceries, utilities, healthcare, and transportation costs, can live comfortably and enjoy an active lifestyle in the original “fun city” about 24 miles outside of Phoenix. And it’s not your grandparent’s retirement community now. Baby Boomers are reinventing Arizona retirement!
Compared to the rest of the U.S., Sun City’s cost of living is 9.20percent lower than the U.S. average. The median home cost is $168,100. Home appreciation in Sun City has been 11.27 percent over the last 10 years.
In addition to its close proximity to Phoenix, Sun City is also close to Mesa, Chandler, and Glendale, Scottsdale, and Tempe—home to Arizona State University.
Baby boomers, the largest generation of retirees in American history, enjoy access to the city’s 8 golf courses, several quality museums, a variety of indoor and outdoor activities, and jaw-dropping views of the beautiful desert landscape.
